PROJECT

WEYMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

Weymouth Football Club upgraded their facilities with the installation of an LED lighting system. The new 250 lux system to The FA’s Ground Grading Category A was required to future proof the club should they gain promotion from the Vanarama National League. Wiseman take pride in supporting the first LED lit football to be played in the Vanarama National League South alongside project managing a wider ground improvement programme including new seating and a new stand roof.

Problem

Weymouth FC were promoted to the Vanarama League and needed to ensure the club’s facilities satisfied The FA’s Ground Grading criteria. The club needed a timely and cost-effective solution to LED floodlighting and a number of ground improvements including new roofing and spectator seating.

Solution

Wiseman Lighting created an innovative plan to improve the current lighting system. Utilising existing infrastructure, the Wiseman team installed a bright and efficient new lighting system, with annual energy saving and no maintenance for 10 years.

As part of the Wiseman service offering, the capital was raised and engineers engaged to carry out imperative structural reports supported by Wiseman partners. This resulted in a new roof for the club’s main stand and new seating for 800 spectators at the same time as the LED upgrade.

PROJECT

Atherton Collieries FC

Problem

Whilst the columns remained sound, Atherton Collieries FC were playing under a set of 18 x 2.1 kW metal halide floodlighting fixtures that had degraded over time & were no longer meeting League standards of light production. The club were keen to upgrade their system a couple of years ago but Wiseman Lighting advised them to wait until the Football Foundation agreed to the funding of LED’s.

Solution

Once approval for funding on LED’s was confirmed by the Football Foundation, Wiseman installed a set of 12 x LED 1.3 kW fixtures onto the existing columns at the club in the summer of 2021. The 12 x new LED lights have raised the light levels on the pitch to an average of 260 Lux whilst reducing energy consumption considerably.

PROJECT

LANCING COLLEGE

Wiseman project managed the planning and installation of new sports lighting at Lancing College.

Problem

Lancing College were experiencing major challenges with gaining planning permission for their existing sand dressed Hockey facility. Due to the location in a Dark Skies area and in South Downs National Park, the college needed a system with advanced optical light control to minimise the spill light and upward light in an Environmentally sensitive area.

Solution

Wiseman Lighting presented the college with an LED lighting strategy that reduced light spill and offered significant energy savings and increased reliability, GrassRoots Power CIC drafted and submitted the successful planning application allowing the facility to be delivered.

PROJECT

EAST GRINSTEAD SPORTS CLUB

Problem

East Grinstead Sports Club required a new lighting solution to replace an ageing Halide system. A unique project given the club’s ambitions to host televised fixtures, the lighting solution needed to perform while reducing glare. A challenging tender process given the club’s location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the solution had to meet strict planning requirements. Wiseman aided the planning application and identified additional funding for the project.

Solution

Wiseman presented a detailed plan for an LED system to be installed utilising existing columns. This enabled the club to make huge savings on running costs while maintaining over 500 lux for match play. The system was installed and has received outstanding feedback from players and coaches. GrassRoots Power CIC managed the planning and supported the successful applications for grants.

PROJECT

ST GEORGE’S HILL LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Problem

Since 1913 St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club has provided world class facilities. With 33 courts in a stunning private estate and as one of the most prestigious tennis clubs in the UK with court surfaces ranging from grass, clay and tarmac the club wanted to deliver three show courts in the latest clay surface and wanted the very best LED floodlighting with minimal glare and spill to the neighbouring residences.

Solution

The procurement process involved St George’s Hill Residents Association who were particularly interested not to impact the picturesque views from neighbouring properties. Wiseman Lighting’s winning solution of 8 x 10m columns with 12 LED fixtures versus 12 x 6m columns and 24 LED fixtures proposed by other suppliers, provided a solution that included excellent performance coupled with no impact to neighbouring residences.

PROJECT

WIGMORE LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Problem

Wigmore LTC needed a new lighting solution for a specific court where other organisations had failed to obtain planning permission. The Club were also keen to be the first in London to install LED lighting in back 2015. With a new developing technology and so many products entering the market, the club approached Wiseman Lighting to gain insight and professional advice. The key issue was providing a suitable sports lighting LED and not an industrial fixture that would cause glare to players and spill light onto neighbouring residential properties situated only meters from the court.

Solution

The Wiseman team managed the club’s expectations recommending waiting for the right solution and 2 years was a long wait until 2016 the perfect system for this ambitious club was commissioned. After patient consultation, the team delivered a high-quality lighting system with a 10-year performance guarantee. With efficient energy usage coupled with reduced light spill in a residential area, planning permission was achieved, and the system installed to the delight of the club and its members…and to the relief of its neighbours!

PROJECT

BLUEHARTS HOCKEY CLUB

Problem

Blueharts Hockey Club encountered significant issues with their planning application, the issues centred around the design of the facility having excess light spill coupled with no allowance in budget for 8 telescopic columns (designed to reduce visual impact of the lighting solution). This meant delays to the delivery of this key facility for the club.

Solution

The Wiseman team provided a solution to the problems and again produced a plan that negated the need for costly telescopic columns. The design finally satisfied planners with minimum spill and Wiseman was able to unlock a project and enable delivery.

PROJECT

BLACKHEATH RUGBY CLUB

Problem

Founded in 1858, Blackheath Rugby Football Club, in south-east London, is the oldest, open, rugby club in the world, with a remarkable pedigree, yet it is constantly looking forward to develop the club for the future.
A move from its original home of Rectory Field to a new location at Well Hall meant a new pitch for Blackheath RFC’s 1st XV which required floodlighting to ensure compliance with the league whilst, at the same time, satisfying environmental constraints relating to the close proximity of a major road (the South Circular Road – A205) and neighbouring residential properties. The club was looking to a future-proofed system in line with these objectives and its aspirations for promotion. The club had gained a grant from England Rugby for the development of the pitch, however this did not extend to the floodlighting, meaning a solution was required to fund the lighting solution as well as carry out the associated works.

Solution

Four 27m lighting columns were installed on the 1st XV pitch with LED dimming settings, installed by Wiseman Lighting (in 6 days) backed up with a 10-year manufacturer’s parts and labour warranty that ensures the club has no costs, apart from energy, for 10 years.
Perhaps the most important role played by Wiseman was to include the services of its CSR provider, GrassRoots Power CIC. Through this innovative partnership, a loan facility was sourced and accepted by the club. This loan was arranged for 10 years, in line with the warranty on the new lighting system, which unlocked the installation of this imperative new system and for the club to concentrate on its on-pitch ambitions.
